Using What you Already Have to Work at HomeSo you want to work at home. You may be someone looking for a whole career change, someone just starting out, or someone that’s been busy parenting for many years and wants to return to the workforce. Either way, you may find that you already have lots of the skills needed to work at home! Most adults acquire skills… skills from past experiences, skills from running a household or a family. This could include scheduling, computer skills, management of both co-workers and time. You may even have specialized skills in writing, editing, sales, customer service, management, accounting, human resources, marketing and communication to name just a few. This does not account for the application of these and the skills below that you apply to your family life. Parents also possess skills that they utilize daily with their children and family’s care and not even realize it. Moms are constantly using negotiation and communication skills with working through children and family problems; using management skills to keep a family’s hectic schedule running smoothly; writing skills to assist family members with homework, or responding to emails; accounting skills to manage a family budget; and planning skills for weekly scheduling, family events and management of a household. Do you have the following skills? Computer/Technology Skills: In today’s world of technology, most people have basic computer skills that enable them to use a computer, work processing programs and navigate the internet. This includes typing, using search engines and writing, or answering emails. Most home business opportunities have you utilizing the internet to promote your business online. Management Skills: This could include managing only you and your home business, or managing a small team of business partners who you also assist with working at home (depending upon if the home business you choose has a recruitment portion with the home business). Perhaps you managed a team of people as a volunteer in the past. Telecommunication Skills: Do you enjoy talking to people? Are you talking with people in different areas at work to help with getting the daily job done? Are you comfortable talking on the phone? If you can communicate effectively by phone, you can work at home! Most home businesses have you talking with people either telling them about your company, your product, or the service that you offer. If you are uncomfortable on the phone, or don’t know where to start, many home business companies offer scripts to use to help you get started. Writing Skills: Finally, those English classes in school can pay off. You utilize writing skills more often than you know and can easily apply them to creating emails to customers, prospects, or for ezines and small text ads to advertise your home business. Customer Service Skills: Many home business opportunities have you working with people who want a product, or have a need for the service you are offering. Are you even-tempered? A good negotiator? Have a helpful, persuasive personality? All of these skills can be used to work at home effectively in customer service, technical support, those types of jobs or your own home business. Sales Skills: Many people shy away from working at home in sales, but think about it. With working at home, many home businesses may have you utilizing sales skills. This sometimes puts people off of working at home. But, many Moms are saleswomen and don’t even know it. As a Career mom, you may already be in a job that has you using sales skills on a dai When you put all these skills together you may find that whatever roll you are in, either as a mom looking to work at home in order to spend more time with family, or as a stay at home mom who wants to contribute to the family income, you can make a home business work for you. If your motivation for working at home is strong enough, you will find that you can tap into your talents to make your home business successful. Additional skills and talents can be learned in night classes, from books or software.
